Electric cars will be mass introduced in the UK, as the Prime Minister plans an environmentally-friendly budget.

Gordon Brown hopes to make Britain “a world leader” in producing and exporting electric cars and hybrid petrol-electric vehicles, reported telegraph.co.uk.

The government will also open talks with power companies to ensure vehicles can have their batteries recharged at power points at the roadside.

Trials of electric cars are likely to begin next year in two or three cities.

Councils will be invited to submit bids to become Britain’s first “green cities”.

Brown said that moving the UK to a low-carbon economy would create 400,000 new jobs over the next eight years.

He added that he would consider buying electric cars for ministers as a means of setting an example.
