Three out of five wealthier and older car owners plan to buy a used car from a franchised dealer the next time they change, according to research from the BCA used car report for 2009.

The BCA survey shows that people up to 34 years of age are more likely than others to buy their next car privately or from a member of their family.

The research shows that 47% of respondents will stick with franchised dealers for their used cars, 23% will sell privately and 14% will go to a used car dealer. A family friend, the internet, car supermarket and auctions took up the remaining small chunks of the vote.

BCA commissioned BMRB International to carry out face-to-face interviews with 2,000 UK motorists in March this year with a regional spread across the UK.
