The first study on the impact of the UK scrappage scheme has been produced by AM’s research operation, Sewells.

AM has been carrying out rolling research, looking behind the headline figures of the Government-backed sales incentive launched in May and designed to lift the beleagured new car and LCV market out of a slump.

Issues considered include the impact on sales enquiries, the most popular cars and the type of customer taking up the scheme.

Plus, crucially, the report also looks at how the outstanding balance of the vehicles is being paid.

One of the conclusions of the report is: “What the UK scrappage scheme has contributed to dealer and manufacturer profitability is not clear and is probably of little interest to the Government.

“Perhaps the country’s car assembly lines will be much better served by the success of Europe’s taxpayer-funded scrappage incentives driving up demand for cars and components which will be sourced from the United Kingdom?”

The exclusive scrappage report forms part of Sewells’ Automotive Industry Insight 2009, a market report for dealer groups, car manufacturers, finance providers, consultants and every supplier in the automotive industry.
