European new car sales saw a 16% increase in December, according to figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
Despite the increase at the end of the year, total European sales for 2009 were down by 1.6%.
A total of 14.5 million cars were sold across 28 European countries in 2009.
