Hummer is to be wound down by General Motors after Chinese manufacturer Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery’s acquisition was blocked by its government.

Tengzhong said it was unable to gain clearance within the timeframe it was given.

John Smith, the vice president of corporate planning at GM, said: "We are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed.

"GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner."

The brand sells in very limited numbers in the UK with just 49 units sold last year.
