Peugeot is claiming a world first with its 3008 crossover powered by a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre 163bhp turbodiesel and an electric motor providing an extra 37bhp. Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4

Users can select four modes: all electric power ZEV, four-wheel drive, sport and auto.

In ZEV (zero emission vehicle) mode the vehicle runs on electric so is ideal for urban use. The diesel engine then only kicks in under sustained periods of acceleration.

Peugeot said the aim is to appeal to customers who expect both environmental-friendliness and technological sophistication, and also genuine driving enjoyment.

The technology, brandedHYbrid4, brings together Peugeot’s best technologies and experience: HDi diesel engines, electric vehicle knowledge, second-generation Stop & Start and electronically-controlled sequential manual gearboxes.

The car will be assembled in France and will launch across Europe from 2011.
