BMW's Hams Hall engine plant in the UK is building a turbocharged three-cylinder engine for future use in the Mini and 1 Series ranges.
The 1.5-litre engine is reportedly capable of up to 160bhp and CO2 emissions as low as 95g/km.
It will not be used in the next 3 Series, said BMW, but is reserved for its front-wheel drive cars.
