Toyota has held a ceremony at its Burnaston factory to mark its 20th anniversary of car manufacturing in Britain.

The very first vehicle ever to roll off the production line at Toyota’s Burnaston plant in 1992, a Carina E, was positioned next to the firm’s brand new model, an Auris, yesterday to mark the milestone.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK’s deputy managing director Tony Walker said: “This is a major milestone for Toyota and one that so many people have contributed to."

The plant now produces the Auris and Avensis models.

Walker said: “As well as celebrating the last 20 years of production, we can also look forward to the future with confidence as we will soon begin production of the new Auris.

“The decision for Burnaston to be the sole European production source of such a key car for the European market is a clear demonstration of Toyota’s continued commitment to the UK.”

The Burnaston plant has produced 3.25 million vehicles since 1992.
