Mercedes-Benz has created a new SLS AMG GT built specifically for the track.

Mercedes is looking to make more of its AMG range as it looks to compete further with BMW’s M Sport brand and attract younger buyers to its dealerships. All of Mercedes' market areas has an AMG specialist centre within it and it is the brand's intention to establish AMG to better rival German comeptition from Audi's RS line and BMW's M Sport products.

The SLS AMG GT, available as a coupe and a roadster, has a maximum output of 591bhp, an optimised seven-speed sports transmission and redeveloped ride control with performance suspension.

Exterior styling has also been tweaked with darkened headlamps and tail lights, red brake callipers and high gloss detailing. The AMG logo on the right of the boot lid also features the additional letters "GT".

The maximum output of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid-engine is 591 hp at 6800 rpm, while the maximum torque is 650 Nm at 4750 rpm. The SLS AMG GT accelerates from 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds, and can reach a speed of 125 mph in 11.2 seconds.

The SLS AMG GT will launch in the UK in October 2012. UK pricing and specification are still to be confirmed.
