Production has started on the second generation of what may well be the world's fastest Land Rover - the JE MotorWorks Zulu² 'Super Defender'.

Coventry-based JE will build no more than 25 Zulu²s, each with a supercharged 475bhp/479lb-ft JE MotorWorks developed Jaguar Land Rover V8, six-speed automatic gearbox and associated integrated chassis, suspension and braking packages.

The first car is a Defender 110 station wagon in Sonic Grey metallic - a unique shade from JE's palette - and will be completed in September 2015. Any Defender derivative can be the base for a Zulu², in either left- or right-hand-drive, and feature upgrades to all major component groups, plus aesthetic, safety and comfort features. Prices start at £149,500, or £125,000 plus local taxes for non-UK customers.

Customers can provide their own car for 'Zulu-isation', with prices dependent upon the vehicle's spec and condition, and customer requirements.

"We've been re-designing and re-engineering Land Rovers for 40 years, to the extent that even Land Rover has bought the rights to some of the engineering, performance and technology ideas we've developed and deployed in our own cars," said David O'Connor of JE MotorWorks.

"We know how to make Defenders go, stop, steer and ride beyond the wildest dreams of most standard Defender drivers - but it's the customers who specify the way they want them to look inside and out, and with whom we work to make it happen.

"Yes, there are some very big things done to the Zulu, but so too are some subtle features the significance of which would only resonate with Defender drivers: our electronic handbrake, for instance, for one.

"Of course, anybody can shoehorn a big motor into a Defender, but the difference with a JE MotorWorks Zulu² is that it is a genuine integration of drivetrain and chassis features that feel like they belong together as one. Fundamentally, if it rotates or moves, then we've modified, enhanced or improved it - and everything operates in harmony."
