Corroded suspension and exhaust faults which could have allowed carbon monoxide inside a car were among issues that landed a used car dealer with a year in jail.

Recorder Barry Berlin, sitting at Wolverhampton Crown Court, told 30-year-old Mohammed Khabeer – boss of Lyde Green Motor Centre – that the cars he sold could have “killed a child”.

The Halesown News reported that Khabeer, who admitted six charges relating to unfair trading, had sold cars riddled with faults including one that could have blown up.

The court heard how a BMW flogged for £12,800 had numerous faults with the brakes and seatbelts along with headlights that did not work properly, faulty electrics and warning lights appeared as soon as the vehicle was started.

Badly corroded suspension and problems with the exhaust meant carbon monoxide fumes could have got into the passenger footwell were uncovered in a Saab bought from the dealership, meanwhile.

Recorder Berlin said that Khabeer should have known about the faults, but had sold the vehicles to make a profit.
