Peugeot 4007 GT
Engine: 2.2 HDI
Price: £25,695

The 4007 is very family friendly. On a trip to Badminton Horse Trials, it coped quietly with motorway cruising and manoeuvred through rain-drenched muddy fields much better than expected. The split tailgate was handy for changing muddy shoes, and there was plenty of stowage space. Overall, it is a sound product, let down only by its ugly and depressive front end.

Kia Procee’d 3
Engine: 1.6 CRDi
Price: £14,395

Handling is the Procee’d’s biggest letdown. Although Kia has taken a great leap forward dynamically, the car is still behind rivals such as the Ford Focus in handling and driver involvement. It’s a shame, because otherwise it’s a great little hatchback with sporty styling and pricing that should tempt younger buyers. The high-power 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine gives it enough mid-range pep to be nippy.

Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Van
Engine: 2.0 TDI
Price: £14,450+VAT

The ubiquitous VAG 2.0 TDI PD engine gives the Caddy Maxi surprisingly good performance, with almost 40mpg. It’s also a comfortable and quiet motorway cruiser with enough room for a large sofa in the back, but still small enough to park easily.
