Vauxhall is hoping the new Astra TwinTop coupé convertible attracts conquest customers when it goes on sale in April/May next year. Key targets are Renault Megane and Peugeot 307 drivers.

Sales appeal will come from the three-piece folding roof, which offers better packaging than two-piece options.

Customers will be able to order the new model from January, with the company forecasting full year sales of around 3,500, similar to the existing Astra convertible. The car will have similar appeal to the Tigra, but for people who need the additional rear seats. It’s based on the longer Astra estate platform for better legroom.

Three petrol engines are available from launch: 1.6 105bhp, new twinport 1.8 140bhp and 2.0 200bhp – plus a 1.9-litre turbodiesel. Pricing will start around £17,500.
