Minis recalled for suspension check

Mini is recalling hundreds of cars because of suspension problems. The recall of 600 Mini Coopers and Mini Ones registered in the UK was ordered after technicians discovered ball joints on some models could become loose.

Although no drivers have reported difficulties, the problem can cause the lower arm of the front suspension to detach. The recall affects cars built up to August 2001 - just one month after the new Mini went on sale. All registered owners have been notified.

BMW, which is to invest another £50m at the Oxford Mini plant, says the suspension trouble has been solved. The 100,000th Mini is due off the line later this month.
