Mazda will reveal a medium-sized sports SUV concept at the NAIAS show in Detroit in January. The company says the MX-Crossport could reach production within two years, and UK sales are a possibility.

The car is a new departure for the company that recently stated its intention to expand its model line-up into new sectors. The company says the MX-Crossport combines strong, sportscar styling with the practical packaging of a sport-utility vehicle. Intended to compete with the likes of Nissan’s Murano, the concept is heavily influenced, particularly the interior, by the company’s highly successful RX-8.

A spokesman says it is too early to talk about engines for the European market. The Murano, another Japanese sporty SUV designed primarily for the US, is limited by its lack of a diesel engine. Mazda will only say they are aware the European market is heavily biased in favour of diesel-engined SUVs.
