Volvo’s S40 range has expanded with the addition of the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel.

The 1.6 petrol is a lightweight aluminium unit with fuel injection and a five-speed manual gearbox to help it obtain fuel economy of 39.2 mpg on the combined cycle with low emissions of 171 g/km and group C VED.

The 1.6 diesel is turbocharged with variable turbo geometry and common rail fuel injection with a lightweight aluminium block and head. It generates 110bhp and reaches 0-62 mph in 12.0 seconds, and can achieve 57.6 mpg on the combined cycle.

Prices start at £15,298 and £16,568 respectively.

Production of both engines started earlier this month, with first deliveries to customers expected in January 2005.
