The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has published its fourth annual CO2 report, which highlights a downward trend in new car carbon dioxide emissions.

The 2004 data shows a 9.7% year-on-year reduction from 1997 levels. The largest decline has come in the MPV and 4x4 segments, down 19.4% and 14.6% in eight years respectively.

The report also studies the details of initiatives for further reductions and places average CO2 from new cars in the context of total road transport emissions.
