Black Horse motor finance comment: Why warranties make sense

The aftermath of the Financial Services Authority warranty regulations at the beginning of last year was a difficult time for many dealers, and indeed some may still be questioning the value of offering insured programmes to customers.

No-one would deny that the new rules presented a challenge, and many would understand why the conclusion some businesses arrived at was to launch their own in-house, uninsured programme in order to avoid coming within the FSA’s remit.

However, research by our warranty partner, Car Care Plan, has shown that the uninsured, in-house option is a route fewer dealers are now considering, let alone taking.

To assist dealers in the insured verses uninsured debate, a new fully-insured three-month warranty has been recently launched within the highly-successful Black Horse Motor Warranty programme – and several dealers in the UK have signed up to the new initiative.

Some dealers may challenge the need for an insured warranty in view of the protection afforded to the customer under the Sale of Goods Act, but the onus is on the dealer to prove that a fault was present at the time of the vehicle’s sale.
