Finding the perfect candidate for a job can be a nightmare, but with a little forward planning it’s not too hard to find the right people.

On deciding to hire a new member of staff you will immediately be faced with a series of questions: Who exactly am I looking for? What skills must they possess? Where can I find the best person?

If you are working for a franchised dealership then it is likely there will be an entire recruitment structure in place.

“We work on behalf of the dealers and basically look for people with the right attitude for the company, as well as the required qualifications for the job,” says Gareth Ebenezer from the Honda Institute."

The candidate search is approached in a way suitable for the location of the dealership and the level of expertise required for the role.

“For example, 12 of our dealerships were looking for B2B sales people and we advertised in the national and trade press. We then combed the 1,600 CVs we received and found suitable candidates to invite for first round interviews,” explains Ebenezer.

What’s the best thing to do if you are an independent dealer with a vacancy? One way of starting your search is by hiring a specialist recruitment company to do the CV slogging and shortlisting.

Marc Preston of John Gibson Associates believes that a little extra investment at this early stage can go a long way: “It may be worthwhile to spend an extra £500 at this stage for someone who could potentially earn you £5,000 per week.”

Based on the resources and information available to them, recruitment companies will select the best two or three candidates. It is then up to you to interview them and decide who is suitable.

Services provided by recruitment companies can include screening, background checks, psychometric testing, checking references and an initial interview.
