The new powertrain is directly derived from the existing 1.6 litre engine already launched within the car ranges of both partners, namely the Mini Cooper and Cooper S as well as on the Peugeot 207.
The joint development of the engines took place in the BMW Group research and development centre in Munich with teams of engineers from both groups. R&D costs are shared by both the partners.
