Renault and PSA Peugeot Citroen have both signed agreements with French electric utility company EDF to create a large-scale zero emissions transport and travel infrastructure system.

The project will start with France but could move on to other countries, with the UK being a possibility following EDF’s purchase of Britain’s nuclear power industry.

The objective of the project is to establish electric cars as a viable transport option for consumers, allowing them to have a national system which will allow them to recharge their electric vehicles.

Between now and January 2010, the partners will study engineering requirements, national and European regulations and all necessary technical and financial procedures, including the identification of new partners, to ensure that the infrastructure is ready for a new electric vehicle launch in 2011.
