Fisker, the manufacturer of niche hybrid and electric luxury cars, has appointed a new chief executive.

Tom LaSorda has been appointed to the post of CEO and vice chairman at the US company, while company co-founder Henrik Fisker will become executive chairman.

LaSorda's CV included chief executive and president of Chrysler Group until he stepped down in 2009 as the carmaker entered bankruptcy.

Fisker's Karma range-extended electric car won BBC Top Gear's luxury car of the year award. Around 1,900 units have been sold worldwide.

Private-equity funded Fisker, which was founded in 2007, has ambitions to become a global automotive brand, although plans for its second model, badged Nina, have been put on hold due to funding issues.
