Facebook has unveiled a major redesign of their News Feed to significantly improve the user experience. The UK has over 32 million monthly active users on Facebook, which is 61% of the population who are online.i

The key improvement is a new layout for the News Feed, which makes much better use of space and will feature bigger images and make it more visually appealing. This will help people get more out of their time on Facebook, which is important as the average user spends more than 55 minutes a day on the site and this may increase once people get used to these changes.  Photos of events, customer handovers and new models will be even more powerful than ever.

One feature that dealers should be making the most of is getting customers to ‘check-in’ when they are on site, particularly when waiting in the service area. Checking-in is a growing trend, with up to a 100,000 check-ins happening every day. Customers don’t need to be a fan of a Facebook page to do this and this significantly increases the reach of a Facebook page to their friends.

The new look will mean that when people check in, rather than just generating a plain text update, it will show a full-on preview of the page, with an expanded map too. So it will be even more important to ensure that a Facebook place is claimed and actively managed.

On average, encouraging check-ins and delivering engaging content generates reach to 4 times as many people on Facebook as the number of fans for a page, and in some cases up to 20 times as many.

Jeremy Evans, managing director of Marketing Delivery says “Checking In puts a dealership in front of friends of your fans and with peer recommendations being more trusted than marketing posts, it’s an influential audience to be seen by.”
