Mazda will launch a special edition MX-5 to celebrate the model’s 25th anniversary.

Prices and an on sale date for the UK are yet to be announced, but the special edition will help boost the appeal of the MX-5, which still has another two years until the next-generation model will be launched.

Based on the 2.0-litre 158bhp Roadster Coupe model with power retractable hard top and either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, it is available exclusively in ‘soul red’ metallic paint.

The anniversary edition features black roof, A-pillars, and door mirror housings; off-white leather seat upholstery and door trim, hand-finished dashboard decorative panel in piano black and Bilstein dampers, plus 17-inch dark gunmetal alloy wheels.

Mazda has sold over 940,000 MX-5s in its 25 years on sale.

Mazda has also revealed its next-generation Skyactiv chassis at the New York Motor Show, which will be used in the next-generation MX-5.

It will be the first time that Skyactiv technology has been displayed in a front-midship-engine layout and rear-wheel-drive configuration. The engine will be located closer to the new MX-5’s centre and the vehicle’s centre of gravity will be lower than in any previous Mazda MX-5.
