10: Raise the industry’s profile

Considerable efforts are being made to depict the UK’s automotive industry in a more positive, dynamic light. Although the Government’s focus seems to always be on the high-profile motor manufacturing sector, other organisations are highlighting the variety of career opportunities across the industry.

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has developed initiatives such as automotive technician accreditation (ATA) and automotive management accreditation (AMA), a professional register, and the automotive management and leadership competency framework.

“Already we have over 1,200 managers on a new, improved programme, which is fantastic for the sector, and really we’re only at the beginning,” said Steve Scofield, head of IMI accreditation.

Rebecca Heeley, academy manager at Hyundai UK, agreed: “We can show there are opportunities to have a career in a great organisation, with structured training pathways and a clear way to progress through that organisation. This is a message we should be spreading as an industry.”
