3: Consider being flexible

From June 30, any employee with at least 26 weeks’ service will have a legal right to request flexible working arrangements. These cover part-time and term-time working, job-sharing, home working, flexitime and compressed hours. Employers must discuss the request with the employee within 28 days, but are not forced to grant it.

The Government hopes such flexibility will create a more loyal workforce, potentially raising productivity and reducing sickness absence. Some dealers, such as Mitchell Group in Cheshire and Unity Automotive in the East Midlands, already close their dealerships on Sundays and most bank holidays to allow staff to enjoy family time. Unity Automotive managing director Jon Mathers said his teams perform better during working hours and achieve more sales as a result.
