Euro NCAP has highlighted safety issues in several new models while awarding five vehicles its top five-star rating in its latest round of crash test results.
Its latest results reveal both improvements and areas of concern for manufacturers launching models in 2025.
Chinese brand Chery’s new Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 SUVs scored four stars after failing to meet expectations in side impact tests.
Euro NCAP said a curtain airbag fault, affecting child occupant protection, remained unresolved after Chery addressed the issue and Euro NCAP performed a retest.
Hyundai’s new small electric car, the Inster, also received four stars after its driver’s door became unlatched during testing.
Although it remains a strong entry in the affordable EV market, Euro NCAP said there was room for improvement.
Ford’s Tourneo Courier, originally rated in 2024 with three stars, returned for reassessment after safety upgrades. The revised model has now earned a four-star rating following improvements to the rear passenger restraint system.
Top marks for Polestar, Lynk & Co, Omoda, Zeekr and MG
Meanwhile, five vehicles earned top marks: the Polestar 4, Lynk & Co 02, Omoda 9, Zeekr 7X, and MG P9 EV.
Polestar led the group with a 92% adult occupant protection score, while Lynk & Co 02 stood out for its advanced driver assistance systems, scoring 89% in the Safety Assist category.
Dr Aled Williams, programme manager at Euro NCAP, said: “Since Euro NCAP began its work in 1997, car manufacturers have dramatically improved the safety of their products.
"But after the Covid-19 pandemic, and then the switch to electric cars, the economic conditions faced by the automotive industry have been challenging and remain tough.
"We know that it is a challenge to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP rating for a new car, but it remains a challenge worth meeting as the benefits go so much further than protecting those inside the vehicle.
"Safer cars also help protect other road users and can reduce the burden on nations’ emergency responders and health services."
