MG is set to expand its electric vehicle range with a new two-seater all-wheel drive sports car called the Cyberster that will launch in the UK in summer 2024.

This pre-production design offers a glimpse of what can be expected with the new model and marks a return to the MG brand roots with a sports-car in the line-up for the first time since the TF ceased production in 2011.

The new model made its first UK appearance at a special London preview event held at the MG Motor UK headquarters in Marylebone, London.

Advanced design director Carl Gotham and his Marylebone team – who played a key role in creating the Cyberster – revealed the model for the first time in the UK, following its global debut at the Shanghai Motor Show in April.

Gotham said: “It is a special moment for all of us who have played a part in designing this unique car. The Cyberster will offer MG customers a striking, all-electric roadster which will be as exciting as MG sports cars of the past.”

Prices and final specifications for the Cyberster are yet to be confirmed, but the potential for a halo car with scissor doors offers a real breadth to MG's range to sit alongside the MG4, MG5, ZS and HS plug-in hybrid.

MG is currently in the process of expanding its retail network with 15 new outlets to help target "in excess of 90,000 sales".

Guy Pigoukanis, MG Motor UK commercial director, said in August last year: “When you are a challenger brand the reality is that where you don’t have representation you don’t sell cars."

“I don’t subscribe to the mindset of other brands who feel that if they slim their network from 160 to 100 sites they will still achieve the same sales and push more volume through their remaining network.

“It’s very easy to underestimate the role dealers play in generating sales. I believe that probably more than half of car buyers buy because of a relationship with a local retailer and not with a brand.

“So, we could perhaps be accused of approaching the market in a very traditional way in a sector that is changing, but I believe it’s still the best formula, a tried and tested one that that is proven to work.”
