The Toyota Aygo and Suzuki Swift have been crowned the UK’s most reliable used superminis, topping Warrantywise’s latest Reliability Index with a score of 88.6 out of 100.
The findings are based on real-world data from 2022 to 2025, confirming the pair as standout choices for used car buyers seeking dependable and affordable motoring.
Superminis remain the backbone of the UK’s used car market, accounting for 32.3% of all used car sales in 2024.
Following the Aygo and Swift, the Kia Picanto clinches third place with a reliability score of 86.8, while the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 follow closely behind at 82.8 and 80.3, respectively. The Renault Clio and Ford KA share sixth place with a score of 79, ahead of the Hyundai i10 (78.4), Dacia Sandero (77.8), and the Hyundai i20 and Mini Cooper, which tie for tenth with 75.9.
The rankings are based on several key criteria: the frequency of faults, the average age and mileage of vehicles at the time of repair, and average repair times. For consistency, all vehicles were classified using the Euro NCAP vehicle categorisation system, ensuring a level playing field for comparison.
Reliable and long-lasting
A particularly notable trend revealed by the data is just how long these small cars can remain fault-free. More than 60% of the top ten models didn't require significant repairs until they were at least eight years old. The Suzuki Swift and Ford KA were top performers in this respect, averaging 8.7 years and 9 years, respectively, before a major issue was recorded.
Antony Diggins, managing director of Warrantywise, commenting, said: “Our latest data backs up what many drivers already know – superminis are one of the safest bets you can make in the used car market. They’re affordable, efficient, and, as our research shows, can be remarkably reliable. At a time when people are being more careful with their money, it’s reassuring to know that you don’t have to spend big to get a dependable car.”
He added that while superminis are proving to be resilient, unexpected repairs can still arise: “With a number of these superminis not requiring major repairs until they’re nearly a decade old, and many models showing excellent cost-per-mile performance, they are an especially wise buy in today’s market. That said, no vehicle is perfect, and issues can happen, so we always encourage drivers to protect themselves with a comprehensive warranty – especially as labour and parts costs continue to rise.”
