Skoda’s new Superb, based on the VW Passat platform, hopes to create big fleet volumes for the Czech brand.

A vast improvement on its predecessor, the car handles brilliantly. It comes with parking sensors, sat nav and cruise control.

While not ugly, it still looks like it would appeal to the grandad generation ahead of any other.

Up against Mondeo, Citroën C5 and Mazda6, it is likely to do well, thanks to the Skoda’s increasing reputation for reliability and pricing: it’s a lot of car for the money with a spacious cabin and boot and comfortable leather seats.

  • Engine: 2.0-litre TDI
  • Price: £21,510
