Ford has released prices of the new Galaxy, on sale from August 1. Prices are generally up £295 with an improved spec. The range starts at £18,495 for the 2.3 LX. It includes a new VW 115bhp TDi engine, starting at £19,995 for the LX rising to £25,495 (2.8 Ghia auto).

BMW has improved the specification of its 2001 model year cars which go on sale without raising the price. New models include a 320iSE saloon at £23,550, and 2.2-litre engines replacing the 2.0 models in the Z3 and 5 Series. A new 2.5-litre turbodiesel is also added to the 5 Series, starting at £26,550, with the SE version £1,300 cheaper than the 3.0d.

Mitsubishi's summer offers include free automatic transmission on the Colt and most Carismas, plus two years free servicing on the family cars. The Galant estate is cut by £1,000 and the turbodiesel Carisma by £600. Two special editions have been added to the Pinin range. The £14,995 Attivo is based on the GLX but gains alloys, CD player, wheel arch extensions and front fog lamps. The Vivo costs £16,995 and adds leather and sat-nav.

Peugeot has re-introduced the 306 Meridian and upgraded the 306 range. The Meridian starts at £11,995 for the 1.4, with alloys on the 1.6, 1.8 (£12,720) and 2.0 HDi (£14,020). Peugeot has added a 2.2-litre SRi to the 406 range, priced £18,245.

Daewoo is offering customers test-driving any of its cars the chance to buy a Matiz for £5. Ten cars are being given away each week.

Volkswagen has introduced two new special editions. The Lupo 1.0 SE is £7,195, a saving of £695 on the base model but gaining alloy wheels. The £9,495 Polo Match is based on the 1.4 S but costs £900 less.

Nissan has slashed prices of the Micra (£800), Almera (£1,100) and Primera (£1,400). List prices remain the same but dealer incentives mean reductions will be offered until at least December. A revised Micra range is introduced with a 1.4 engine replacing the 1.3. The list price of the entry-level 1.0 S is down £250 to £7,700, with other models in the range reduced by a similar amount.

Audi has increased dealer incentives so prices can be cut by 10. Only the TT and S3 get 'proper' list price reductions in response to Porsche's action two months ago. The TT Coupe 180 is now £24,050, down £2,600, and the TT Roadster 225 is reduced by £3,150 to £29,000.

Citroen has introduced a 5dr version of the Berlingo Multispace. It replaces the 3dr model but prices are up to £1,650 lower.
