The Lexus LS430 has been named as the only car to achieve the maximum five-star rating for resistance to being broken into and to being stolen, according to security tests.

The New Car Security Ratings, based on analysis by Thatcham Research Centre for the Association of British Insurers and Lloyds, is for the first time available to motorists. They can either phone 0870 5502006 or access the ABI's website for the results.

The LS430 also achieved top marks on the What Car? security test. What Car? found that 42 out of 67 new models failed to meet Home Office guidelines stating that a car should be able to resist a break-in for at least two minutes. The Chrysler PT Cruiser was worst with a break-in time of five seconds, followed by Chrysler's Voyager (six seconds).

But all the cars prevented a thief from driving them away for five minutes.
