The Government is so keen for motorists to start using the national network of LPG fuel filling facilities it has been fostering, that it went public this week about the £30m sweetener for motorists. Energy Minister Brian Wilson said motorists should used 2003 to “turn over a green leaf” and make the switch.

£30m is available to motorists under the Department for Transport's Powershift programme for price reductions on purchase of 'green' transport – including LPG vehicles – listed on the Powershift register. The Government furthered its encouragement for the LPG market recently with the launch of a £1m LPG fund to help train garage mechanics..

Says Mr Wilson says these inducements, together with the benefits accrued by using a fuel which is half the price of petrol, should be sufficient to persuade the consumer.

“It is a win/win situation – while helping the environment, motorists will also be saving themselves considerable amounts of money, especially if they travel long distances or live in rural areas.

“This is why I want fleet managers, car hire firms, taxi companies and individual motorists to explore the LPG option.”
