Competition Minister Gerry Sutcliffe is seeking views on plans to revoke a piece of competition law that place restrictions on the sale of car parts.

The Restrictions on Agreements (Manufacturers and Importers of Motor Cars) Order 1982 prevents exclusive deals between car part manufacturers and importers, and franchisees.

The order was made in 1982 after the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) found that such deals were anti-competitive. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has advised that this order has been superseded by other legislation and is no longer necessary.

The revocation order can be found on the DTI website at: www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics2/monoplies.htm and responses are required by January 21, 2005.
