Anti-theft system for sat-nav

Ford has developed a new registration process to deter thieves from stealing portable satellite navigation systems from cars.

All of Ford’s navigation systems are now given an individual security code which makes it more difficult to sell and much easier to trace.

Ford dealers have teamed up with Retainagroup, the security specialist company, to market a £10 DIY kit which includes a unique code and 24-hour access to the Retainagroup’s ‘international security register’ (ISR). Details of the original owner and their sat nav system will be kept on Retainagroup’s database.

Retainagroup said: “The markings and ISR registration deters thieves by making marked vehicles and components more difficult and riskier to sell. A single call to the ISR can quickly and easily determine whether the seller is the rightful owner.”

Metropolitan Police officer commander, Rod Jarman said: "Theft of satellite navigation systems from vehicles is a major issue, and any idea which will combat the problem is to be welcomed."
