Project Kimber is to draw up a contract to redesign and produce the Smart Roadster and Roadstercoupe under a different name, after it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the struggling DaimlerChrysler brand.

The MoU includes the intention to purchase production equipment for both models that is not needed by Smart anymore.

Recent press rumours have stated David James, who is heading up Project Kimber, has approached Nanjing Automobile to buy the MG Rover brand name to use on the new Roadster models. Press reports have also said production would be moved from Nanjings dormant Longbridge plant to Coventry. However, Nanjing has denied the speculation.
