Alistair Darling has lost his position as transport secretary in a major Labour Cabinet shake-up.

Douglas Alexander, the former Minister of State (Europe), Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has been given the position, with the additional role of Secretary of State for Scotland.

Alexander, MP for Paisley & Renfrewshire South, will be in charge of modernising Britain's transport network and the controversial issue of airport expansion.
