Audi has fitted its Q7 SUV model with a Le Mans V12 TDI engine, which it says makes it the most powerful diesel passenger car in the world.

The manufacturer said the Euro V compliant 6.0-litre 500bhp model would be available in the Q7 line-up in the ‘foreseeable future’ but declined to name an official date.

Currently undergoing pre-production testing, the new engine is mated to a quattro four-wheel-drive system which is linked to a six-speed tiptronic transmission.

It can reach 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds and power on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Audi is claiming the V12 Q7 will achieve 23.7mpg.
