Law: Car ‘clocking’ still in the news

Bedfordshire County Council have recently prosecuted Mr Walid Yousif relating to mileage reductions (‘clocking’) of two Mercedes-Benz vehicles for sale.

In one case the mileage was reduced from 191,000 miles to 79,000 miles.

However, it appears the Republic of Ireland may become a haven for car clocking in the near future given the sentences imposed.

The National Consumer Agency (equivalent to our Trading Standards Officers) found Orange Motors Ltd had supplied four cars with reduced mileage readings.

They escaped fine or imprisonment but were required to give an undertaking to compensate customers and cease the malpractice.
