A BBC Watchdog investigation has led Citroen to recall more than 20,000 Picasso C3 cars in the UK because of concerns the brakes can be activated from the passenger side.

The investigation revealed the brake could still be engaged through a cable - covered by felt - under the passenger footwell, a problem arising from modifications from left to righthand drive at the French factory.

In a statement, Citroen said there had been no reports of the problem before the programme aired, but because of a "remote possibility" it could happen, it would recall the cars.

"The recall will require the fitment of an additional component to isolate the braking mechanism from the front seat passenger," the statement said, with work carried out at no charge to customers by Citroen dealers.
