Dealer management software provider Pinewood says the arrival of 4G high-speed connectivity – up to seven times faster than the existing 3G service – will allow dealers to offer improved video performance.

Everything Everywhere, which includes Orange and T-mobile, says 4G coverage for London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol is just weeks away. It is aiming to cover 98% of the UK by 2014.

Pinewood’s managing director, Neville Briggs, commented: “While the rollout of 4G is likely to take some time, we expect dealers to soon start taking advantage of the added speed.

“At the most basic level, this could mean video footage of every used car in your inventory on your mobile website. At another, it will mean a technician could ‘walk’ a customer around a problem with their car. This could be done live or sent as a recorded video message.

“Similarly, it opens up new marketing opportunities. Many dealers now text customers and this could be upgraded to video – for example, a sneak preview of a model you are launching.”
