Thieves fled empty handed after trying to ram security gates at a Vospers Motor Group site in Plymouth.
They tried to steal a Peugeot 308 by driving through the metal gates securing the Thornbury Road site, which is home to Vospers' vehicle rental business.
But instead of breaking through, the car suffered damage to the bonnet and windscreen, with the indicators, wipers and number plate ripped off.
The thieves then fled the area.
Police want to hear from anyone who may have been in the area and saw suspicious activity.
