A Lancashire driving instructor conned his clients into giving him substantial amounts of cash by claiming he could buy them cars at a discount.

Denis Whitfield of Horbury Drive, Bury has been jailed for 40 months after duping eight clients into handing over £244,000. He admitted eight counts of fraud by false representation.

A qualified driving instructor for 37 years, Whitfield had got himself into debt and was effectively stealing money from clients to pay off debts he had racked up by deceiving other clients, Bolton Crown Court was told.

He had banked the money but no new cars were ever delivered.
