Autotech Training is the first UK provider to offer the NTDA’s plug-in vehicle tyre technician course for teams working on electric and hybrid vehicles.
The Licensed Electric Vehicle Tyre Technician (LEVTT) course, officially unveiled at Automechanika this week, marks a further expansion of Autotech Training’s growing EV training portfolio.
The initiative is designed to equip technicians with the skills and safety knowledge required to work on high-voltage vehicles and correctly fit EV-specific tyres.
As of April 2025, more than 1.5 million electric vehicles were on UK roads, a figure that has more than tripled since 2021.
With EVs now representing nearly 5% of the UK's national car parc, the aftermarket will need to adapt as EV volumes continue to increase.
EVs typically weigh 20–30% more than ICE equivalents due to battery mass, placing greater stress on tyres.
Alistair McCrindle, operations director at Autotech Training, said: “With EVs becoming commonplace, this training is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s essential for both technician safety and customer confidence.”
The LEVTT course, aligned with the IMI’s Level 1 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness, covers high-voltage safety, vehicle system awareness, correct tyre selection and fitting, and best practices for working on EVs.
Delegates are trained to identify and fit tyres specifically engineered to meet the demands of EVs, "helping reduce risk, improve vehicle performance, and preserve battery range".
