The automotive industry charity Ben has published its latest annual Health and Wellbeing Report, highlighting deepening concerns around mental health, stress, and financial pressure among sector employees.
Drawing on feedback from over 1,000 automotive workers, the survey reveals that stress (57%), poor sleep (52%), anxiety (44%), low mood (41%) and not taking time to rest (43%) are now the top five health and wellbeing issues affecting the workforce.
Worryingly, mental health has worsened year-on-year, with automotive employees continuing to report significantly higher levels of workplace stress and poor work-life balance compared to UK workers in other industries.
One in nine respondents said they felt unsupported by their employers when it came to mental health.
The data also shows a 6% increase in poor work-life balance (now 38%), with the issue most pronounced among employees in dealerships, parts departments and garages—roles often associated with long hours, staff shortages and rising workloads.
A clear call to action for the industry to do more
Nearly 25% of respondents said they are considering leaving the industry, and half of those cited poor mental health as a major factor in that decision.
Financial strain remains a pressing issue, too.
With the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, one in six reported skipping meals, one in five are dealing with debt, and financial stress was cited by a quarter of those considering leaving the sector.
Ben chief executive Rachel Clift said the charity’s latest findings show a workforce under increasing pressure: "Stress remains the biggest issue for our automotive family, with many struggling to find time to rest and raise concerns about access to support.
"Money worries continue to pile on the pressure, taking a clear toll on people’s mental health.
"Our annual survey helps us tailor services to those who need them most and supports our conversations with industry leaders about improving workplace wellbeing. We want everyone in the automotive industry to know that Ben is here for them."
Now in its eighth year, Ben’s Health and Wellbeing Survey is designed to give a voice to the automotive workforce and guide the charity’s support and services.
