Volkswagen has launched the Caddy California, a ready-to-use camper conversion of its Caddy van.

The new model is available to order from VW Van Centres, priced from £30,720.

It features a foldable bed and mini-kitchen as standard, along with seating for five.

The Caddy California completes Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ camper line-up alongside the T6.1-based California and Crafter-based Grand California.

The compact camper is a unique offering within the camping segment, enabling variable living, sleeping and storage space.

It features a new foldable bed (1,980mm x 1,070mm) that is stored in the parcel shelf and opens out above the rear seats. The second row of seats can also be removed, while a standalone tail-tent, providing additional living space and sleeping compartment, is available as an accessory.

A retractable mini-kitchen is included as standard, extending from the rear with single-burner cooker and integrated gas bottle. Stowage compartments for storing cutlery and kitchen utensils is provided, while California camper chairs and a camper table come as standard too. Interior blinds for the rear windows double up as window storage bags. Light is provided from integrated LED reading lights in the passenger compartment and tailgate.

Air conditioning, power-adjustable wing mirrors and anti-theft alarm form part of the standard specification. Driver assistance technology - such as Driver Alert system, Lane Assist, Cruise Control including Speed limiter, Front Assist, and towing protection - also features.

Buyers can specify the California Plus pack for £984. It includes a front centre armrest with space for two drinks, a 230V inverter and three-pin UK domestic plug socket, dark tinted rear glass, two USB points, power latching on all doors and LED rear combination lights.

Prices start from £30,720 for the entry-level 1.5 TSI 114PS powertrain and manual gearbox, with the 2.0 TDI 122PS DSG variant priced at £32,820.

The Caddy California is also available in Maxi size, priced from £32,076.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles recently launched a range of mini-mobile camping units, offering a kitchen area, bed, water supply, and storage space for Caravelle, California Beach Tour and Caddy models.

They're designed for customers who wish to avoid a costly vehicle conversion, offering a range of modular units that fit into existing luggage compartments.

In September 2021, Alan Day Group announced it was set to launch a pure electric ABT Volkswagen e-Transporter 6.1 onto VW’s Mobile Service Clinic fleet to offer zero-emission maintenance to London-based customers.
