Review

The family crossover market has been flooded with so many models that manufacturers have to concentrate on features which set their model apart from the rest.

Whereas Mazda’s CX-7 focused on its sporting credentials rather than its off-road capability, the Altea Freetrack 4 does the opposite, with several of them churning up mud on an off-road course at Cannock Chase on the UK launch.

The Freetrack 4 is based on the Altea XL and is Seat’s first all-road vehicle. There is a two-wheel drive version on sale in Spain, but Seat will stick with the four-wheel drive model in the UK.

There’s just one highly specified model and two engines to choose from. A particular highlight is the rear-seat multimedia system with a roof-mounted seven inch screen with connection links for DVD players, video games, laptop computers or MP3 players.

True to Seat’s youth brand image, the 2.0-litre 198bhp petrol and 2.0-litre 168bhp TDI diesel engines on offer make for extremely quick progress for a car of its size.

The Altea, with annual sales of around 6,000 units, is the third best seller in the Seat line-up.

Predictions are that the Freetrack 4 will push annual Altea sales closer to 7,000.
