Comet, the high-street electrical retailer, is launching a new car sales operation offering low-price motors as part of a two-month trial.

But a spokeswoman for the company, which has 248 stores, says there are no plans to open its own multi-marque showrooms.

Comet Drive offers consumers up to 20% off the price of a Ford Fiesta, Renault Megane, Citroen Picasso, Volvo S40 or MG TF. Cars are supplied by Solihull-based dealer Drive Smart, which also provides breakdown, including 12-month access to a 24-hour emergency assistance helpline, and warranty. They are delivered to drivers' homes.

Finance deals are available in the form of unsecured loans to buyers through GE Capital Bank. Leaflets promoting the mail order based Comet Drive operation will be displayed in high street stores.
