AM-online has learnt that the Environment Agency is to publish figures on the number of businesses that have registered under the Hazardous Waste Regulations, which came into force on July 16.

The figures, expected within the next few weeks, follow a report published in June in which the Environment Agency revealed that fewer than one in five car service and repair garages were aware of the new rules.

All garages must register with the Environment Agency. Any business yet to sign up is not allowed to handle hazardous waste – fines will be imposed on any company that does. In addition, garages must ensure that any firm collecting their waste materials is also registered with the EA.

Global Research Management (GRM) in Leeds is offering hazardous waste workshops to help businesses comply with the regulations.

GRM managing director Tracey Kelsall-Brown says: The new regulations really do affect everybody. Routine servicing products, including oils, greases, coolant and anti-freezes, now come into the hazardous waste category and garages have no option but to register with the EA or face a fine.”

Kelsall-Brown warns lack of knowledge is no defence.
