DaimlerChrysler AG, the owner of the Mercedes and Chrysler brands, is reportedly considering a deal with Chinese car maker Chery Automobile that could see it selling Chery cars in the American market.

The sources quoted indicate that DaimlerChrysler and Chery have begun talking to a number of potential component suppliers.

The venture could start by selling small numbers of cars in China before any significant exports begin to the United States.

Production would reportedly begin at Chery’s existing facilities at Wuhu, which have a capacity of 300,000 units a year, which will be extended by a new plant to be constructed starting next year.
